_Breakthrough to Nursing (BTN)
Established in 1965 by the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA), the mission of the Breakthrough to Nursing (BTN) project is to organize, represent, and mentor students preparing for initial licensure as registered nurses, as well as those nurses enrolled in baccalaureate completion programs, in becoming practitioners sensitive to the cultural diversity that exists in our society. The project promotes the development of the skills needed to be responsible, accountable members of the nursing profession who respect the differences and similarities between people, advocates high quality care, utilizing the principles of transcultural nursing, and facilitates the development of peer support systems, which enhance recruitment and retention within the nursing profession.
This year, the NSNA BTN theme is
“Make a Splash: Dive into Diversity!”
-Memo from the BTN Director: “Hello everyone! My name is Marnita Stallworth and I am the Breakthrough to Nursing Director this year for AANS. My theme for the BTN (Breakthrough to Nursing Chair) project for 2011 is “Choose INSPIRATION as your career. BE A NURSE.” I want NSNA, SNA, AANS members/leaders to go to their local high schools, YMCAs, or Boys & Girls Clubs and educate youngsters about the field of nursing and the care nurses provide. Also I would like for the youngsters to learn about all the different paths that can be taken with a nursing degree, the endless possibilities that are achievable in the field of nursing, and how they can be a walking inspiration to othes as a nurse. Teaching can be done via pamphlets, speakers, demonstrations, videos, audio visuals or whatever will spark interest to get more minority young people interested in choosing nursing as a career. The sky is the limit so be creative in your enlightenment. I hope everyone is successful and have a great time in the process. Also, As the Breakthrough To Nursing Director for the Alabama Association of Nursing Students (AANS), I am very excited to announce the AANS Annual Nursing Scholarship Essay Contest. The recipient of this award will receive a $100.00 scholarship. The award will be presented to the individual on Friday evening at the state convention.
