State Project
This year’s state project recipient is Southeastern Diabetes Education Services
Children living with diabetes have a tremendous challenge.
Southeastern Diabetes Education Services (SDES) teaches children and their families how to Live Well with Diabetes!
SDES educates, empowers, and inspires children with diabetes at Camp Seale Harris overnight camp, Sugar Falls Day Camps, and Sugar Falls Community Programs, in Montgomery and across Alabama.
The unending, everyday management of diabetes can be overwhelming to the entire family.
Camp and Community Programs are a safe environment where everyone from fellow campers to counselors to volunteer medical professionals knows about diabetes. Kids motivate, inspire, and teach each other under the supervision of trained adult volunteers, physicians, nurses, diabetes educators, nutritionists, and pharmacists.
SDES campers, staff, and volunteers all have one goal in common—living well with diabetes.
As yet, there is no cure for Type 1 diabetes. Learning to manage diabetes consistently is critical to avoiding life-threatening complications such as kidney failure, heart and vascular disease, blindness, and
depression. Children with diabetes come from all ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds.
SDES is committed to giving all children the opportunity to learn, regardless of ability to pay. Your donation helps SDES to serve more families and help them grow healthier in body and soul.
**All schools chapters can help SDES this year in several ways.
1. Hygiene Kits: Children who attend these informative and life-changing camp sessions oftentimes will need personal hygiene items for their stay. It is the goal of AANS to gather personal supplies to make hygiene kits for the children of SDES. We are asking that each respective chapter gather the following items and create hygiene kits for the children. These will be collected at our state convention:
Items: toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, dental floss, deodorant, lotion, wash cloths, towels, socks, shampoo
2. Volunteerism: Each summer and throughout the year, SDES needs volunteers to help with their day camp and community programs. Each chapter may choose to volunteer with SDES. The volunteer and application process can be found at the link below.

3. Donations: Chapters may also elect to donate funds to help SDES continue to provide quality educational programs to children with diabetes and their families. The link to donate is posted below.
